Public Health Awareness
The public health awareness section in MHI aims to target the physical, psychological and social health of the general public. Our goal is to inform, educate and empower communities about issues that involve the elderly and the young by carrying out interactive sessions and seminars between participants and facilitators in collaboration with different health boards.
This year the MHI public health awareness calendar focuses on topics based on the health awareness months and are distributed evenly throughout the year.

Facilitated by Dr Aleesha Adatia – a clinical cancer specialist, supportive care and pain management expert. This was carried out in collaboration with the Central Medical Board of the KSI. Apart from learning about the basics of cervical cancer, a presentation of a true story of a cervical cancer survivor in the developing world was presented. Special discounted packages for Pap smear and consultation with a gynecologist at the Ebrahim Haji Hospital were provided to all attendees!

MHI in alliance with the Lions club of Dar es Salaam conducted an exciting workshop at the Shabaan Robert Hall where attendees were educated on important areas such as: cardiopulmonary resuscitation, choking, seizures, drowning, burns, asthma attack, allergic reactions, trauma, hemorrhage control, fractures and sprains. The workshop was facilitated by 2 emergency medicine specialists: Dr. Hussein Manjiand Dr. Shaina Yusuf and a Critical Care Nurse: Zainab Karim – Alimohamed.

For the forthcoming months, MHI has planned to organize and carry out a Mahdi Health Camp in collaboration with the Lions club. The purpose of the camp will be to educate the crowd on “Diabetes and Hypertension” as well as to incorporate other areas of health care services such as BMI, blood glucose checks, dental and vision among others. We have also arranged for a “Family Planning and Contraception” seminar during the month of September which commemorates world contraception day with the objectives of creating emphasis on the importance of informed reproductive choices, delivering basic knowledge on various contraceptive methods, indicators of their effectiveness, side-effects, non-contraceptive benefits and eligibility criteria besides other agenda intended for the day.
Overall, we believe to have managed to tackle a few of the vast pool of public health concerns by dwelling on some of the important topics in order to protect and improve the health of our people at both the societal and community level through the educational programs that were set for the year.
